In the third in the “richly detailed and diverse” (io9) urban fantasy series, the time has come for the dead to rise up against the shady powers-that-be... The time has come for the dead to rise up... Trouble is brewing between the Council of the Dead and the ghostly, half-dead, spiritual, and supernatural community they claim to represent. One too many shady deals have gone down in New York City’s streets, and those caught in the crossfire have had enough. It’s time for the Council to be brought down—this time for good. Carlos Delacruz is used to being caught in the middle of things: both as an inbetweener, trapped somewhere between life and death, and as a double agent for the Council. But as his friends begin preparing for an unnatural war against the ghouls in charge, he realizes that more is on the line than ever before—not only for the people he cares about, but for every single soul in Brooklyn, alive or otherwise...

Carlos Delacruz is just following orders when he offs the only other half-dead guy in New York. It should’ve been a job like any other, but then Carlos agrees to protect the dying man’s sister Sasha from the Council, the very sprawling bureaucracy of death that Carlos works for. Maybe he does it because she’s also like him: partially resurrected, a ghoulish mistake with no past, living in the undercurrents of the city. Or maybe it’s just the endearing way she looks out at him from the dead man’s crinkled Polaroid. Either way, Carlos sets out to find the mysterious woman before the Council does and quickly ends up tangled in a nefarious web of necromancers, hipsters, and tiny demons with unpronounceable names.

The author of Half-Resurrection Blues returns in a new Bone Street Rumba Novel—a knife-edge, noir-shaded urban fantasy of crime after death. The streets of New York are hungry tonight... Carlos Delacruz straddles the line between the living and the not-so alive. As an agent for the Council of the Dead, he eliminates New York’s ghostlier problems. This time it’s a string of gruesome paranormal accidents in Brooklyn’s Von King Park that has already taken the lives of several locals—and is bound to take more. The incidents in the park have put Kia on edge. When she first met Carlos, he was the weird guy who came to Baba Eddie's botánica, where she worked. But the closer they’ve gotten, the more she’s seeing the world from Carlos’s point of view. In fact, she’s starting to see ghosts. And the situation is far more sinister than that—because whatever is bringing out the dead, it’s only just getting started. From the Paperback edition.

From Hitler to Trujillo is a memoir by a Holocaust survivor Alfredo Vorshirm. His gripping story embodies the Jewish European experience during and after World War II and dramatizes the events that impelled Vorshirm to the Dominican Republic at the height of the Trujillo dictatorship. Living in Belgium rather than Germany, the country of his birth, when World War II broke out, Vorshirm and his family found themselves imprisoned by the European Allies because they were Austrian-German enemies. Then he was imprisoned by the Germans when he was caught in a raid without legal identification papers and in possession of illegal foreign currency. After being held and tortured in a Gestapo jail for nearly a year, he joined the Italian partisans where he was wounded. He had become separated from his parents who went to Switzerland where they thought they would be safe. Eventually, he served with a unit of the US 82nd Airborne Division and took part in the liberation of Europe. After the war, searching for a homeland, circumstances caused him to choose residence in the Dominican Republic. Vorshirm served the Dominican Republic as a Senior Army Officer in a top post with the Technological Services of the Armed Forces, as a Representative to the UN in New York and Geneva, and as a diplomat in Belgium, until he was abruptly removed and ordered back to the Dominican Republic. For several centuries Cape Town has accommodated a great variety of musical genres which have usually been associated with specific population groups living in and around the city. Musical styles and genres produced in Cape Town have therefore been assigned an "identity" which is first and foremost social. This volume tries to question the relationship established between musical styles and genres, and social - in this case pseudo-racial - identities. In Sounding the Cape, Denis-Constant Martin recomposes and examines through the theoretical prism of creolisation the history of music in Cape Town, deploying analytical tools borrowed from the most recent studies of identity configurations. He demonstrates that musical creation in the Mother City, and in South Africa, has always been nurtured by contacts, exchanges and innovations whatever the efforts made by racist powers to separate and divide people according to their origin. Musicians interviewed at the dawn of the 21st century confirm that mixture and blending characterise all Cape Town's musics. They also emphasise the importance of a rhythmic pattern particular to Cape Town, the ghoema beat, whose origins are obviously mixed. The study of music demonstrates that the history of Cape Town, and of South Africa as a whole, undeniably fostered creole societies. Yet, twenty years after the collapse of apartheid, these societies are still divided along lines that combine economic factors and "racial" categorisations. Martin concludes that, were music given a greater importance in educational and cultural policies, it could contribute to fighting these divisions and promote the notion of a nation that, in spite of the violence of racism and apartheid, has managed to invent a unique common culture.

We are a collection of voices, the assembled history of the many voices that have spoken into our lives and shaped us. Voices of the past, voices of the present, and voices of the future. There is an African proverb, "Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi,” which translates as "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.” This is why we continue to remember the tales of struggle and tales of perseverance, even as we look to tales of hope. What a people choose to remember about its past, the stories they pass down, informs who they are and sets the boundaries of their identity. We remember the pain of our past to mourn, to heal, and to learn. Only in that way can we ensure the same mistakes are not repeated. The voices make up our stories. The stories make up who we are. A collected voice.
